Jos Groenier – regissör/scenograf

Jos studied stage-design at the Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp, Belgium.

He received his master diploma at the Jan van Eyck academy in Maastricht (prof. Nicolaas Wijnberg). At the consevatorium of Arnhem Jos studied percussion and also studied art history at the University of Utrecht.

Jos assisted at the opera of Antwerp, Brussels, Paris, Monaco and at the Holland Festival in Amsterdam and Utrecht.

As a percussionist Jos played in pop-, underground-and jazzg roups, classical orchestra.

Jos has been acting and directing in a commedia dell’arte company, playing the small squares of Venice for local audience, during several summer-seasons.

He is co-founder of the Utrechtse Theater Initiatieven ( U.T.I.), a theatre-company staging music-theatre on special (not regular theatre) locations.

As an independent director-designer (in theatre/opera/musical theatre) Jos worked in Utrecht, producing for the  Holland Festival Ancient Music, Camarata Trajectina, U.T.I. followed by invitations from all over Holland: Haagse Comedie, De Appel, Het Nationale Toneel, Theater van het Oosten, Joop van de Ende’s Stage Holding and from abroad: Antwerp/Bruxelles-Belgium, Kopenhagen-Denmark, Harbin-China, Cologne-Germany, Kautokeino/Tromsø/Molde/Oslo-Norway, Rome-Italy, Istanbul-Turkey, Krakow-Poland, Kiev-Odessa Ukraïne. London-Liverpool UK. Jakarta-Indonesia

Jos Groenier was honoured to produce several Barock opera’s for the Dutch Queen, in order to be offered as State Present to the Danish Queen, Norwegian King and Italian President.

Teaching stage design Jos was teaching at the Art Academy in Tilburg, Rietveld-academy Amsterdam, the Theatre Academy in Maastricht and the Statens Teaterhogskole Oslo.

Further he gives stage presentation for musicians and singers (song/opera interpretation) at the conservatory of Tilburg, Maastricht and Groningen

He is co-founder of Magogo Orchestra (contemporary way of presenting classical music) and artistic leader of music theatre company Cinema de Liefde  in Amsterdam.

Since 2001 Jos has been developing multi-disciplined performances combining theatre, staging, music, opera, dance, film and Circus.

Jos received the oeuvre award from the Fentener van Vlissingen Foundation, nominations for the John Kraaijkamp musical award for Passion- Sondheim/Aspects of Love-Andrew Lloyd Webber an award for the stage design for Jesus Christ Superstar and the P.U.G. award for founding the U.T.I., as well as the Norwegian State prize for the most outstanding performance and direction (production Good person of Sezuan).

He lately worked with Andreas Scholl, Jordi Savall, the renaissance wind ensemble Capella de la Torre and vocal quintet Amarcord. Jos directed recently the first fully staged western opera production in Indonesia: Carmen/Bizet.
